Dark Roast Coffee Hair Dye - Clean Swap or Total Flop?!
By now, you’ve probably noticed that I am desperately trying to find an all-natural way to beat my stubborn grays into submission. With a big family event around the corner, I am frantic to find a way to tame these bad boys, and fast! Coffee is my buddy, my daily hero, the friend that I can’t wait to wake up and see. Will coffee be able to save the day when it comes to my grays? Let’s go for it!
The Test:
I am going to dye my hair using organic, dark roast coffee brewed at 3x strength. I will mix the brewed coffee with organic hair conditioner to form a leave-in treatment, which will sit on my hair for 1 hour under an always-stylish shower cap. C’mon coffee - don’t let me down! Here are the before pictures:
The Necessities:
Coffee pot
Ground, organic dark roast coffee - the darker the roast, the better
1/2 cup of your favorite organic conditioner
Bowl
Hair comb
A shower cap (and a stick to fend off potential suitors who will undoubtedly flock to you with marriage proposals when they see you rocking this look)
A shirt you don’t mind getting stained **yep, our coffee concoction WILL stain!
The How-To:
Brew the heck out of your coffee. I made mine with 3x the coffee grounds I normally use and only about 1/2 cup of water. The result was a VERY dark, concentrated cup of Joe.
Put 1/2 cup of your conditioner of choice into a bowl.
Slowly add brewed coffee and mix until the conditioner is brown but not runny. You may have to add a bit of conditioner to obtain the correct consistency. The goal is to have a thick paste that will adhere to your hair without dripping off.
Apply mixture to damp hair, combing through from root to ends to ensure total saturation.
Cover with shower cap and get ready for those suitors I mentioned earlier!
It’s hard being this glamorous.
After 1 hour, rinse in the sink or shower - just be careful with any clothing you may have to take over your head!
The Results:
Coffee, I still love you despite the fact that you did absolutely nothing to color my gray hair. I will not hold a grudge, nor will I stop seeing you every morning of every day!
My grays have won this battle BUT THEY WILL NOT WIN THE WAR! I hope :)
