Beetroot Lip/Cheek Stain - Clean Swap or Total Flop?!

One of the things I noticed during the hours upon hours I spent staring at the face of my newborn baby was how absolutely, positively, perfectly pink her little lips were. L had the epitome of perfect lips from color to size to shape! She must have gotten those genes from her dad, however, since I have nearly white (LITERALLY white!) bare lips.

I am definitely one of those people who needs a little something on my lips . While I can’t quite pull off the bright red lip that my sweet mama can, I do like a little added color! When I saw the claim that red beets can be easily turned into a lip tint/rouge, I was totally intrigued!

Will this clean swap turn my lackluster lips into a can’t-wait-to-kiss-her kisser? Read on to find out if beetroot lip stain is a Clean Swap or Total Flop!

The Test:

I am going to make lip tint/cheek rouge using organic beets, coconut oil and honey. Coconut oil is ultra-hydrating and honey is amazing for lips due to it’s anti-inflammatory, wound-healing properties (bye-bye chapped lips!). Fingers crossed that this swap is a winner!

The Necessities:

  • 1 organic red beetroot (if you’re like me, you’re probably wondering if beetroot is the same as a beet… save yourself a Google search - it is the same!)

  • Blender

  • 3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil

  • 1 tablespoon organic honey

  • Fine strainer or cheesecloth

  • Small container, like a 4 oz mason jar

The How-To:

  • Chop your organic red beetroot into quarters and place in blender.

  • Add coconut oil and honey.

  • Blend until slushy. If your mixture feels too dry, add a touch more coconut oil and honey.

  • Strain the beet compote through cheesecloth or a fine strainer into a small jar. Note - this is a liquid stain! It will not set into a salve-esque lip balm. We would need to add organic beeswax to make it feel more like a true balm.

The Verdict:

The color. THE COLORRR. It is so vibrant, absolutely beautiful and surprisingly shiny! I was really excited to try this stain on and was really pleased with the results. I am obsessed with this stain as cheek rouge - it gives you a just-unexpectedly-ran-into-your-crush rosy glow and lasts all day! As for the lip - I really love the color but, unfortunately, I found that it kind of settled into the fine lines around my mouth (what the heck?! I’m only 34!) instead of keeping the smooth, uniform look. I might play around with the recipe to see if turning this liquid stain into a salve/balm might prove better for the lip. All in all, this is absolutely a staple in my beauty regimen now and is rated a Clean Swap!
