DIY Dry Shampoo - Does It Work?

As a brunette, I’ve never loved the “blonde’s have more fun!” catchphrase (for obvious reasons). However, there is indeed one aspect of life where I believe that those blonde babes really DO have more fun - haircare. My fellow dark-haired friends and I don’t JUST have to deal with grays sneaking through to ruin our ‘do. We also have to deal with looking greasier than your average blonde and then trying to blend white dry shampoo into brown/black hair. Am I being dramatic? Absolutely. Do I still want to find a natural, dark-colored swap for chemical-filled dry shampoo? Absolutely :)

Commercial dry shampoos are jam—packed with chemicals, many of which are linked to cancer and a plethora of other bodily issues. Talc, isobutane, propane, butane and countless other chemicals? No thanks.

When I came upon the claim that cocoa + arrowroot powder can be used in lieu of my favorite dry shampoo, I was definitely intrigued. I’ll have better looking hair AND I’ll smell like brownies? Good move for my hair/bad move for my diet. Let’s give this beauty claim a try to see if it is a Clean Swap or Total Flop!

The Test:

I am going to prepare my own natural dry shampoo using arrowroot powder (also known as arrowroot starch) and cocoa powder and apply it to 2-day-old hair (my poor husband!).

The Necessities:

  • Arrowroot powder (I used this one)

  • Cocoa powder (Yummmm)

  • A kabuki brush/blush brush for application

  • Bowl or container to hold mixture

  • Hairbrush

The How-To:

  • Mix 2 Tablespoons of arrowroot powder with 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.

  • Using your kabuki brush (or any other larger makeup brush), apply the mixture liberally to your roots.

This picture was taken right before my toddler dumped nearly the whole bowl of dry shampoo on me :) Little stinker!

  • Brush through hair with your hairbrush and style as normal!

The Verdict:

I am in LOOOOOOOOOVE with this clean dry shampoo swap! Oh my goodness! The smell isn’t overwhelming (honestly, I can barely smell it), I didn’t have to rub and brush a million times to get white dry shampoo to blend into my dark hair and YOU GUYS, my hair is full and pretty! The best part - no unhealthy chemicals sitting on my head all day long! If you’re a dry shampoo lover, this easy, healthy swap is for you! The only thing that would make this recipe better is if it covered my grays!

**If you’re one of the blonde babes I mentioned above, this recipe is even EASIER for you! Simply leave out the cocoa powder and brush the arrowroot powder onto your roots <3
